Obesity is a serious health concern affecting the global population for a few decades strolled past & it is linked with multiple diseases and their complications. A large number of weight loss supplements are sold as “slimming aids” worldwide. However, either scientific evidence is ambiguous or lacking regarding the efficacy of various supplements.
The green coffee extract (GCE) has gained wide popularity with some results in weight reduction in a few groups consumed it. A few scientific studies also have been conducted in small groups or samples.
Coffea, (genus Coffea), genus consists of about 125 species of flowering plants of the family Rubiaceae, Coffea canephora robusta is another species of coffee plant. These two species of coffee plant and their bean, Coffea arabica and C. canephora, contribute to the major part of world’s coffee consumption Green coffee extract [ GCE] is extracted from both species. The traditional method of extraction of GCE from green coffee bean, Coffea canephora robusta, involves the use of alcohol as a solvent. GCE is present in green or raw coffee [2]. It is also present in roasted coffee, but much of the extract is destroyed during the roasting process.

What is the impact of Green coffee extract on your body?
According to studies chlorogenic acid of green coffee extract have a significant effect on the absorption and utilization of glucose from the diet. This may result in reduced body mass and body fat when compared with the use of normal instant coffee [1].
A study suggests that GCE can also influence hormone secretion and glucose tolerance in humans. chlorogenic acid might have an opposing effect on glucose transport and reduce intestinal glucose absorption rates [2].
Green coffee also seems to inhibit the enzymatic activity of glucose-6-phosphatase of liver, which is involved in the regulation of glucose. It is an enzyme responsible for the formation of glucose originating from gluconeogenesis and glycogenolysis processes within the liver.
In animal studies, chlorogenic acid was identified as a specific inhibitor of the glucose-6-phosphate translocase [4].
Reports from animal studies have suggested that green coffee bean extract (GCBE) mediates its weight reducing effect possibly by suppressing the accumulation of hepatic triglycerides.
One study suggest that GCBE is possibly effective against weight gain and fat accumulation by inhibition of fat absorption and activation of fat metabolism in the liver.
Caffeine was found to be a suppressor of fat absorption, while chlorogenic acid was found to be partially involved in the reduction of Triglyceride [TG] within liver .
In addition, green coffee has antioxidant activity against free radicals.
The research studies conducted shows positive effect of green coffee in reducing weight gain. However, the effective dosage of Green coffee extract for use as a weight loss supplement has not established yet. Only small sample size research details are available currently. Further extensive research studies are to be conducted in large population groups to know its efficacy as well as side effects ,if any.
Safety:
More rigorous trials with
longer duration are needed to assess the efficacy and safety of GCE as a weight
loss supplement.
