Lifestyle diseases &Diets

Since a couple of decades, obesity or excessive body mass and weight, a preventable health crisis is surging unprecedently endangering the health and longevity of global population. Obesity is the prime cause of several grave morbidities or illnesses affecting the mankind including diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, cancers, hormonal diseases and metabolic syndrome. Obesity is a major health problem affecting both children and adults alike in developed, developing and low-income countries of the world.

According to world health organization [data of 2022] more than 1 billion people worldwide are obese – 650 million adults, 340 million adolescents and 39 million children. This number is surging in a rapid pace everywhere on the globe. Although multiple factors contribute to the risk of obesity, nutrition and diet  have prime role in managing obesity and maintaining healthy weight along with physical activity & exercises.

Impacts of obesity on health

Obesity poses progressive but detrimental impacts on cardiovascular, reproductive and general health in adults as well as in children and lead to a range of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension and stroke, various forms of cancer, as well as mental health issues. Lifestyle diseases have risen to an unprecedented level in the recent decades and it endangers the health and longevity of global population tremendously.

How does obesity lead to lifestyle diseases?

  • The fat stores in adipose tissue

When the body has excessive calories more than it can use, it converts the extra calories into lipids and stores them in the adipose tissue (body fat). Beyond a limit the fat cells get enlarged. Enlarged fat cells secrete hormones and other chemicals that produce an inflammatory response. This is the beginning of INFLAMMATION which triggers a cascade of events in the body at multiple levels of health.

  • Chronic inflammation initiates a series of adverse health effects contributing to insulin resistance. Insulin resistance implies that our body can no longer use insulin efficiently to lower blood glucose and blood lipid levels.  The consequent spike in the blood sugar and blood lipids (cholesterol and triglycerides) levels in turn lead to high blood pressure. This condition of the body is known as metabolic syndrome.  Metabolic syndrome accelerates the pace of further weight gain and makes it more difficult to lose weight or maintain the weight loss achieved earlier.
  • Metabolic syndrome is a common factor in obesity and contributes to many other related diseases including Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, heart attack and stroke.
  • Fatty liver disease – Impact of obesity on liver
  • Excess fats circulating in the blood may get deposited in the liver, when the liver begins storing excess fat, it can lead to chronic liver inflammation (hepatitis) and long-term liver damage (cirrhosis].
  • Higher blood cholesterol levels can cause cholesterol to accumulate in your gallbladder, leading to cholesterol gallstones and potential gallbladder diseases like cholecystitis.
  • Remote impacts of obesity on human body
  1. Asthma.
  2. Sleep apnea.
  3. Obesity hypoventilation syndrome.
  4. Osteoarthritis.
  5. Back pain.
  6. Gout
  7. heightened risk of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.
  8. Female infertility and pregnancy complications.
  9. Depression and mood disorders.
  10. Certain cancers, including esophageal, pancreatic, colorectal, breast, uterine and ovaries.
  11. Obesity in children

Grades of obesity -Health science classifies obesity into class types based on body mass index [BMI] and its intensity. If your BMI is between 25.0 and 29.9 kg/m², you are in the overweight category. The three general classes of obesity that healthcare providers use to evaluate the grade of obesity to decide obesity management protocols and it is strictly individualized. They include:

Class I obesity: BMI 30 to <35 kg/m².

Class II obesity: BMI 35 to <40 kg/m².

Class III obesity: BMI 40+ kg/m².

BMI [Body mass index]:

Body mass index (BMI) is a measure of body fat based on height and weight that applies to adult men and women.   Body Mass Index (BMI) is a person’s weight in kilograms (or pounds) divided by the square of height in meters (or feet). A high BMI can indicate high body fatness. BMI screens for weight categories that may lead to health problems, but it does not diagnose the body fatness or health of an individual.

A body mass index (BMI) over 25 is considered overweight, and over 30 is obese.
